A 59-YEAR-OLD man from Kingsdale in Bulawayo has appeared in court for allegedly raping his nine-year-old granddaughter after the two were left alone at home.
The perpetrator (name withheld to protect the identity of the victim) appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Collet Ncube facing a charge of rape. He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to 7 February.
Allegations against the offender are that sometime in 2019 during the night, he was left with the victim and he raped her.
After the offence, the old man reportedly told the juvenile not to disclose the matter to anyone and promised to do something big for her in future if she kept the secret.
On 23 January this year at around 6am, the juvenileโs mother asked her daughter about the US$20 that she had been seen spending at school and she lied that she had picked up the money from the school grounds.
Upon further inquiry,ย the girl opened up and told her mother that she was violated by her grandfather.
The matter was reported to Queenspark Police Station and the juvenile was examined at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH).
