Health and Child Care Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora has officially commissioned a 450-kilowatt solar unit for the National Pharmaceutical Company (NatPharm).

The project was made possible through funding provided by the UNDP through the Global Fund.

Speaking after the commissioning, UNDP resident representative, Dr Ayodele Odusola said NatPharm’s transition to solar power will result in significant annual savings of US$150 000 in electricity costs.

He said the UNDP and Global Fund will continue to maintain the unit for the next three years, after which the responsibility will be handed over to the Government.

Dr Odusola pledged his organisation’s commitment to continue working with the Government.

Global Fund head of High Impact Africa 2, Mr Linden Morrison said the 450kw solar system will go a long way in strengthening the health sector.

He said the project has a lifespan of 15 to 20 years.

Mr Morrison commended the Government for a successful multi-sectoral response in the fight against Covid-19
