Gun-toting mine boss, violent protest worker arrested

In a dramatic showdown that unfolded in the Midlands province, a Chinese mine supervisor was arrested after allegedly brandishing a firearm at an enraged worker demanding unpaid wages.

Both the worker and the Chinese national have since been arrested.

National Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incident in a statement on what transpired at Bijour Farm in Lower Gweru on Tuesday.

โ€œThe Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating an assault and firearm-pointing incident that occurred at Bijour Farm, Lower Gweru, Midlands Province,โ€ read part of the statement.

The clash reportedly began when Kholwani Dube, a 38-year-old worker, confronted his Chinese supervisor over unpaid dues.

Tempers flared, words turned to threats, and the situation spiralled out of control.

Dube, armed with an okapi knife allegedly stabbed the supervisor in the leg. In retaliation, the Chinese national drew a firearm, pointing it at Dube.

Both Dube and the unnamed Chinese supervisor now face criminal  charges, according to Commissioner Nyathi.

In another incident, a day later on Wednesday, a young man, 20-year-old Mthandazo Sibanda, was shot with a 9mm Derya pistol while allegedly attempting to steal gold ore from  Filabusi at Binyup 5 Mine.

The trigger was pulled by a Chinese national, who has since been arrested by the police.
