TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew said on Saturday that the company will do everything in its power to ensure the platform thrives when responding to the US Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the ban of the popular short-video app in the country.
“I want to thank President Trump for his commitment to work with us to find a solution that keeps TikTok available in the United States,” Chew said in a video posted on the platform.
Chew’s statement came after the US Supreme Court upheld a law requiring TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance to sell the app to a US company by Sunday or face a nationwide ban.
TikTok said on its official website on Saturday that “The statements issued today by both the Biden White House and the Department of Justice have failed to provide the necessary clarity and assurance to the service providers that are integral to maintaining TikTok’s availability to over 170 million Americans.”
“Unless the Biden Administration immediately provides a definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers assuring non-enforcement, unfortunately TikTok will be forced to go dark on Jan 19,” it noted.
“The Supreme Court decision was expected, and everyone must respect it. My decision on TikTok will be made in the not too distant future, but I must have time to review the situation,” US President-elect Donald Trump wrote on social media platform Truth Social.
US media reported that US President Joe Biden’s administration is not planning to implement the TikTok ban which is set to take effect on Sunday, and will leave it to President-elect Donald Trump and his officials to act after they take office on Jan 20.
According to a report from The Washington Post, Trump is considering an executive order that would suspend the enforcement of the TikTok sale-or-ban law for 60 to 90 days. -— China Daily.
