AS the new year begins, it is a perfect time to take stock of your health. In Zimbabwe, many clinics and laboratories offer affordable and accessible tests that can help you stay ahead of potential health issues.
From routine check-ups to targeted screenings, these tests are a proactive way to ensure a healthy year ahead. Let us explore the essential health checks suitable for various age groups.
For children (0–12 years): Building a healthy foundation
The early years are critical for growth and development. Regular check-ups at clinics ensure that they are meeting their developmental milestones and staying healthy.
Growth monitoring: Clinics measure height and weight to ensure children are growing appropriately for their age.
Immunisation check: Reviewing vaccination records is crucial to keep children protected against preventable diseases like measles and polio.
Stool tests for parasites: In many parts of Zimbabwe, intestinal parasites are common. A simple stool test can confirm if treatment is needed.
General health check: These visits often include assessing hearing, vision, and general physical health to catch any early signs of developmental issues.
For adolescents (13–19 years): Staying on track during transition
Teenagers face unique health challenges as they navigate growth spurts, hormonal changes, and new responsibilities. Clinics are equipped to provide essential tests to guide them through these years.
Nutritional assessment: Screening for conditions like anaemia helps ensure they get the nutrients needed for growth.
HIV and STI screening: Many clinics offer free or low-cost voluntary HIV testing and basic STI screening, an important step for sexually active adolescents.
Mental health check: While not a lab test, mental health assessments provided by trained clinic staff can identify stress, anxiety, or depression, often overlooked in this age group.
For adults (20–40 years): Laying the groundwork for long-term health
For young adults, focusing on preventative care is key to avoiding chronic illnesses later in life. Clinics and labs in Zimbabwe provide straightforward tests to keep you on track.
Blood sugar and cholesterol checks: Early detection of high blood sugar or cholesterol can prevent diabetes and heart disease. These tests are quick and available in most clinics.
HIV testing: Regular testing is an essential part of responsible health management and is widely available across Zimbabwe.
Pap smear for women: This simple test, offered in many clinics, is vital for preventing cervical cancer.
TB screening: With TB being a common health concern, clinics offer sputum tests or basic screenings for those showing symptoms like a persistent cough.
For middle-aged adults (41–60 years): Staying vigilant
This stage of life often comes with increased risk for chronic conditions. Clinics in Zimbabwe are well-equipped to offer essential screenings.
Blood pressure checks: Hypertension is a silent condition that is easy to monitor with regular clinic visits.
Kidney and liver function tests: Basic blood tests can reveal early signs of organ issues, especially for those on long-term medications or with a history of alcohol use.
Breast exams and mammograms: While mammograms might require specialised labs, clinics can provide manual breast exams and refer patients if necessary.
Prostate exams for men: Clinics often offer digital rectal exams, a simple and effective way to screen for prostate issues.
For seniors (60+ years): Prioritising comfort and longevity
Older adults should focus on managing existing conditions and preventing new ones. Zimbabwean clinics and labs provide essential services to support healthy aging.
Blood sugar monitoring: Diabetes management starts with regular blood glucose checks, easily done at any clinic.
Bone health assessment: While advanced bone density scans might not be common, basic physical exams and calcium level tests can highlight concerns.
Eye and hearing tests: Regular vision and hearing checks at clinics can identify cataracts or gradual sensory loss.
Start the year right: Health checks don’t have to be overwhelming or expensive. By visiting your local clinic, you can address key health concerns for you and your family. Make 2025 a year of proactive health—one test at a time.
