Chunga backs Benza’s ZIFA candidature

LEGENDARY midfielder Moses “Bambo” Chunga feels local football will benefit from having Herentals chairman Tafadzwa Benza among the Zifa leadership.

A new Zifa board will be elected into office on January 25.

Chunga feels the way Benza has distinctly run Herentals, with its big numbers, deserves a big pat on his back.

Benza is seeking an executive post in the upcoming ZIFA elections.

And Chunga, an advocate of those who have previously played the game to take leadership posts, has found a legitimate exception by endorsing Benza for a ZIFA board position.

“I find it very difficult not to mention his (Benza’s) name. He has done a lot for football ever since Herentals College FC came into being.

“His deeds speak for themselves. This one needs no introduction in football,” said Chunga.

“He has been driving a huge orchestra with about seven professional teams over the past six or so years with distinction.

“He is also very young and energetic with a clear vision.

“His unrivalled passion for the development of football in the country has seen the Herentals College football institution grow from merely a Premier League team to being the biggest employer in the game in the country.”

Benza is credited with viably running seven professional teams, including the dominant Women Soccer League champions, Herentals Queens; Herentals’ Premiership side, which emerged as the best team in Harare in the 2024 season after finishing fifth; a Division One side; and three other teams in Division 2 dotted around the country, plus a sprouting academy for both girls and boys. Benza’s manifesto centres on inclusivity, development, grassroots attention, and a touch of athlete-centrism.

“But it all starts from the grassroots,” said Benza.

“We need to turn it around and be competitive at the international level. We need a vibrant junior policy and also give equal opportunities to both boys and girls.”
