The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has announced significant progress in the construction of Kunzvi Dam, with the project currently at 56 percent completion.
The dam is expected to be completed 2025 and provide water for irrigation on at least 500 hectares of land, benefiting farmers and local communities.
One of the key benefits of the dam will be its contribution to alleviating water challenges in Harare’s eastern suburbs, providing much-needed relief to the capital’s expanding population.
In a statement ZINWA said the dam construction, work on a water treatment plant and a pipeline to transport water to Harare is underway, with various components at different stages of completion.
“The construction of Kunzvi Dam in Mashonaland East progressed well and recorded remarkable progress in 2024, with the project closing the year at 56 percent completion,” said ZINWA in a statement.
“Kunzvi Dam, which is on the Nyagui River, which forms the boundary of Murehwa and Goromonzi Districts, is one of the dams targeted for completion in 2025.
“The dam is expected to provide water for the irrigation of at least 500 hectares of land for surrounding communities in addition to providing water for domestic purposes for the expanding Juru Growth Point, Cross and Musami Business Centres as well as Majuru Business Centre in Goromonzi.”
ZINWA said it is also envisaged to help ease water challenges in Harare by providing water for the capital’s eastern suburbs.
“Work on the construction of the water treatment plant and the pipeline that is set to convey the water to Harare is also in progress and at different levels of completion,” said ZINWA.
“Also, underway and as part of the composite project is the design of a ministry hydroelectric plant that will provide power to local communities.
“Current works on site include placement of core material on both the left and right banks as well as the riverbed sedition where a total of 839750 cubic metres of core material have been placed,” said ZINWA.
ZINWA said fill placement is ongoing, with 507,920 cubic meters completed to date, with the left bank having also seen the addition of 3,210 cubic meters of sand, alongside 14,225 cubic meters of riprap.
Other developments include work on the outlet tunnel, where 11 tonnes of 200-millimeter diameter steel are being fixed, and the curing of the D tunnel walls.
Excavation of borrow areas and the stripping of formwork on the intake tower are also progressing, with 27,330 cubic meters of river sand stockpiled on site.
