Kabondo, Mhandu dominate Liquor Hub 10km Fun Run

WAYNE Kabondo and Caroline Mhandu emerged winners of the ninth edition of the Liquor Hub 10km Fun Road Race held in Bulawayo yesterday. 

This year’s event marked the final 10km edition, as organisers announced plans to upgrade the race to a 21km event next year.

Kabondo, representing Mr Pace Athletics Club, dominated the men’s 10km race with a winning time of 29 minutes and 32 seconds. 

Munyaradzi Zizhou closely followed, finishing seconds behind in 29 minutes and 34 seconds while Martin Mutsapa secured third place with a time of 30 minutes and 03 seconds.

“I’m thrilled to have won the men’s 10km race. The competition was fierce but I managed to stay focused and push through to the finish line. I’m looking forward to next year’s 21,1km event and the opportunity to test my endurance,” said Kabondo.

In the women’s 10km race, Caroline Mhandu from Zimbabwe Correctional Services took top honours in a time of 36 minutes and 06 seconds. 

Ethel Pangiso and Tulange Mudenda secured second and third places, respectively, finishing in 37 minutes and 16 seconds and 37 minutes and 43 seconds.

“I’m overjoyed to have won the women’s 10km race. The course was challenging but I’m proud to represent Zimbabwe Correctional Services, and l am happy to have won this race,” said Mhandu.

The race, which has been running for nine years, aims to promote a healthy lifestyle, encourage community participation and raise funds for local charities.

Organised by Liquor Hub, the event has grown in popularity over the years, attracting runners from all over the country. 

The race featured professional and recreational runners.

This year’s event marked a significant milestone, as it was announced that the race will be upgraded to a 21,1km next year. 

This change is expected to attract more runners and elevate the event’s profile on the local athletics calendar.

As part of a new package for the Liquor Hub 10 km Fun Run, a football match between legends and former players from the Southern Region and those from the North has been organised for White City Stadium today.

The match will serve as a campaign against drug and substance abuse.
