Davido’s new single celebrates African unity

JOHANNESBURG. – Davido has sampled the late Brenda Fassie’s “Vuli Ndlela” for his latest single called “Funds”, which features ODUMODUBLVCK and Nigerian pop and soul sensation Chike

The recently released track is part of the musician’s upcoming album “5IVE”, due out February. The “Feel” hitmaker believes that this is “his best album to date”.

In a statement, he added that he hopes that the song becomes a statement of pan-African unity.

“I’ve been a fan of ODUMODUBLVCK’s energy and unique style for a long time and Chike is an artist I respect a lot and whose career I’m really excited about, working with them on ‘Funds’ was an African dream,” he said.

Davido said that they were also determined to create something unique with this project.

He also wanted to make a song that reflects their African roots but that can also resonate with music lovers across the globe.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian superstar also released the “Funds” music video last Friday. Along with appearances from the featured artists, it also sees Davido as he competes at auction against a potential love interest.

Davido’s new album comes following the success of his Grammy-nominated album “Assurance”, which broke streaming records and became the most streamed African album in Apple Music history on its first day.

In regards to “5IVE”, he said that fans can expect to hear evolution as a musician. He added that it is also full of his signature Afrobeats style that has earned him over 5 billion streams and countless accolades worldwide to date.

Meanwhile, the extensive list of artists who feature on the album are set to be announced soon.

Last month, Davido took to stage in front of 21,000 fans at The State Farm Arena in Atlanta to celebrate his birthday and whet his audience’s appetites for the release of the new album.

Davido, who is often referred to as The King of Afrobeats, has cemented his status as a global force since he broke into the industry 13 years ago.

Last year, he became the first African artist to top the iTunes Album Chart with the release of “Timeless”, which garnered three Grammy nominations in the Best Global Music Album, the Best Global Music Performance for “Feel” and the Best African Music Performance for his smash hit “Unavailable”.

This year, he received his fourth nomination for Best African Music Performance at the 2025 Grammys for his hit single with Chris Brown called “Sensational.”

In 2024, Davido also performed during his sold-out concerts during his tour of the US, the UK and other international locations.

He has also taken to the stage at some of the world’s most iconic venues such as New York City’s Madison Square Garden performance and the O2 Arena in London.

Earning over 30 awards and nominations internationally, including 2023’s Grammy, BET, EMA and VMA Award nominations, Davido has also featured on the cover of “Forbes” magazine.

He also made appearances on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”, “Jimmy Kimmel Live”, “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” and “The Kelly Clarkson Show” among others. – IOLnews.com
