Thokozani Flats, a residential area in Mzilikazi, was hit by a devastating hailstorm on Monday evening, leaving several families homeless and their belongings destroyed.

The hailstorm, which lasted for about five minutes, caused significant damage to the roofs of the flats, resulting in asbestos sheets cracking and falling inside the apartments.

Gladys Chikore, one of the affected residents, described the terrifying experience, stating: “The rains started heavily, and it sounded like someone was throwing stones on top of the roof. That’s when asbestos started cracking and falling inside.” Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.

Another resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared their ordeal with B-Metro during an interview. They expressed their helplessness during the hailstorm, saying: “We didn’t know where to run to because it was raining heavily outside, and it was dangerous inside the house as well.

The roofs were falling inwards, posing a danger to us.”The hailstorm not only left the residents traumatized but also caused extensive damage to their furniture and personal belongings. All of their possessions were destroyed, leaving them in a state of despair and uncertainty.

Jacob Magutshwa, the Chairman of the Mzilikazi Residents Association, expressed his concern over the situation and called for assistance from well-wishers and responsible authorities. “This situation has drained us as a community, and we hope we get help from well-wishers and responsible authorities,” he stated.

The affected families are now left without shelter and in urgent need of support.
