POLICE in Bulawayo have arrested two men in connection with the murder of a local businessman in front of his house in Entumbane suburb.

The now deceased businessman Calisto Muzumbi (39) who operated a hardware shop in the city centre, a furniture and hardware shop at Entumbane Complex as well as a supermarket at Zothile Shopping Centre in Entumbane was stabbed to death on 3 October.

In a statement Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said police received a tip-off that led to the arrest of Onward Munashe Mudumbu (22) and Eric Gunda (22).

Insp Ncube said police arrested Mudumbu and Gunda after they picked a red woolen hat that was allegedly worn by one of the suspects on the day the crime was committed.

Allegations against the pair are that on the fateful day the now deceased businessman arrived at his home from his shop and when he was disembarking from his car, he was allegedly manhandled by three unknown men who attempted to snatch his satchel which contained money.

โ€œHe tried to fight them and in the heat of the moment one of the men stabbed him in the neck and he screamed for help. The trio ran away.ย  He staggered to the main door of his house but he fell down and he was rushed to the hospital by his neighbours,โ€ the statement reads in part.

He died upon arrival at the hospital.

โ€œWe urge members of the public to desist from carrying large amounts of money especially during the night. We also appeal to members of the public to volunteer any information that could lead to the arrest of the other suspect who is on the run,โ€ said Inspector Ncube.
