THE remains of three freedom fighters, originally buried in Muchemwa Village under Chief Svosve in Mashonaland East, have been exhumed and relocated to their ancestral homesteads.

Speaking to The Herald, Mr Enoch Muvirimi, grandson to one of the exhumed freedom fighters, narrated how the liberation stalwarts were killed and buried.

Mr Muvirimi said they were exhumed and reburied on Saturday.

The three are Cdes Enoch Muvirimi, Johani Nyamayedenga Chiyanike and Mufanikiso Ganda, with the process spearheaded by the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe.

On Saturday, Government officials held a send-off ceremony for the remains in Harare.

The three were murdered during a night-time meeting by white settlers on June 9, 1979 and left at the scene.

They were discovered by their comrades the following morning and subsequently buried.

The burial site was identified by a witness, Mr Fedi Congiri, who had detailed knowledge of each individual interred there, as well as the exact location of their graves.

The families have expressed appreciation to the Government for making it possible to get the remains of their loved ones back home.

Families can now find closure, Mr Muvirimi said.
